In the construction of open computer networks, security is a key consideration. The goal of this book is to promote an integrated approach to security. It describes the design and implementation of security systems within an open distributed framework, with particular emphasis on the features, protocols, services and mechanisms which characterise a global, integrated security system.

The results of the second stage of the international CEC sponsored COST 11 Ter "Security" Project are published here. The project culminated in the design of a Comprehensive Integrated Security System ( CISS ) with applications to many operational environments.

Introducing the basic concepts of distributed systems and network security, the authors focus on the practical benefits of CISS these are illustrated by examples of its implementation. Also included is a full overview and analysis of the ISO / OSI standard for security architecture.
